Our Eating Disorder Treatment Programs

Our eating disorder treatment services are divided into the following three groups:

Anorexia Nervosa (AN)

Anorexia nervosa is often associated with extreme weight loss due to a fear of gaining weight or the desire to be thin. People with anorexia often have a distorted body image and may severely restrict their food intake. Our treatment team utilizes evidence-based therapies to help people suffering from this disorder understand the physical and emotional impact of their eating behaviors, while working towards developing healthier patterns.

Bulimia Nervosa (BN)

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by frequent episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, laxative or diuretic abuse, and excessive exercise. Our treatment team understands the emotional complexities that can accompany this disorder and uses cognitive-behavioral therapies to help people struggling with bulimia create a healthier relationship with food and their body.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

Binge eating disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period of time, accompanied by feelings of guilt and distress. Our treatment team understands the psychological components of this disorder and works with clients to identify triggers and learn skills to cope with difficult emotions in healthier ways.

Other Conditions We Treat

Other Conditions We Treat

We can treat other specified feeding or eating disorders, or OSFED. This is an umbrella term that encompasses eating disorders that don’t fit the criteria for a diagnosis of anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. OSFED can include any combination of disordered eating behaviors, including restrictive dieting and compulsive overeating. Symptoms may include unhealthy weight fluctuations, preoccupation with food, or a fear of gaining weight. The treatment for OSFED is similar to the treatment of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, with some modifications as needed.

Additionally, we treat avoidant food restrictive intake disorder (ARFID) which is characterized by a lack of interest in or refusal to eat certain foods based on an aversion to the food’s taste, texture, smell, or appearance. ARFID can lead to nutritional deficiencies and other health concerns if left untreated.

Healing the Underlying Causes of Disordered Eating

Our treatment for eating disorders aims to heal the underlying causes, rather than just managing the symptoms. When treating a client, we examine a person’s:

  • Genetics – We understand the role that genetics can play in a person’s eating disorder, and work to help people identify how their genetic makeup has affected their disordered eating.
  • Family dynamics – Family dynamics can affect a person’s disordered eating and we work to help clients understand the role that their family environment has played in their struggles.
  • Societal pressures – We help clients understand the societal pressures that can lead to disordered eating, such as the media’s influence on body image.
  • Traumatic experiences – Traumatic experiences often play a role in disordered eating, and we work to process these experiences with clients.

When treating our clients, we strive to provide a safe and supportive environment where they can explore their feelings and work towards overcoming their eating disorder.
